windows 8 won't start apple mobile device service

Gen 3 ipod touch isn't being recognized in iTunes. Apple Mobile Device Service cannot be started on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control requst in a timely fashion. Windows 8. Recently replaced router.

iPod touch (3rd generation), Windows 8

Have you looked at the AMDS topic of:

iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows

I would start with:

Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

Uninstall and reinstall seemed to work. Haven't tried to sync Gen 3 ipod, but worked for older ipod.
