Adobe Photoshop should not be needed in order to open and install any printer firmware update.

Check your printer manufacturer's website for instructions about how to update the firmware on your printer.

Program and operating system updates, including firmware updates, I've encountered are usually packaged as a self-installing program, often with the filename and extension of '.dmg' ("disk Image" for a computer running Mac OS X), or perhaps a '.zip' file (a method of encoding and shrinking several files into a single smaller file, often used for Windows computers, but occasionally for Mac.)

It's possible that the update you've downloaded is intended for installation from a Windows computer instead of from a Macintosh computer.

If you use the printer wirelessly, it's also possible that your computer needs to be directly connected to the printer via a USB cable in order to install a firmware update. Again, check the computer manufacturer's firmware update instructions.

Kostby... thanks so very much for responding. It is for a MAC and It is a wireless Lexmark all in one ( never again!) ... I just dont get why it keeps trying to open in Photoshop! It is so weird... other downoads doo alright, but not this one. and my printhead is screwed up. ..... so I have just ordered a new one ( I really want to run over this preinter, and that is what comes form trying to get somehing on the cheap!)
The printer is connected to the computer so that is not it! Troubleshooting these things will lead a sane person to a double vodke and tonic with extra lime! thanks for trying to help; Judi

I downloaded a Lexmark firmware update file for a color laser printer, just to see what it contained.

It downloaded as a .zip file.

I double-clicked the .zip file to un-zip it. (Sorry, I'm not sure which program actually did the unzipping.)

Once unzipped, it contained several files for multiple operating systems, including Windows and OS X.

Double-clicking on the PrinterFileLoader.dmg should start the installation on your Mac.

Your firmware update README file should contain similar information.
