no enrtry sign when in disk mode

After problems with my 160GB ipod classic I finally got it into disk mode but get a no entry symbol on the screen and Itunes tells me it cannot sync the device and I cannot access it.

When i plug it into itunes it goes into 'verifying'.

Any ideas please?
