Iphoto crashes when importing photos? (no 3ivx. plugin found??)

hi, i have just got a canon 7d and often when importing photos into iphoto 11, (version 9.3.1) iphoto crashes, no matter how many times i try it fails to import, i have searched but not found the 3ivx. plug in that seems to have caused everyone the same problem and when iphoto does import my photos, every 10 photos is courupted and comes up black? i am shooting in raw (.CR2) any help or suggestions would be great thanks.

P.S. i am trying to put off updating to the latest iphoto update because i have almost 40,000 images/videos and whenever i have to update my library iphoto freaks out and i end up having to create a new library and import all photos from scratch which takes me days which i simply dont have......

Well that shouldn't happen and doesn’t happen to other people. Methinks that when you get to the bottom of that issue you'll have solved the other.

What format is that external drive?

Your problems are caused by a font:

/Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/Resources/Fonts/Superclarendon Italic.ttf

Though it is within the iPhoto application itself - probably as part of a theme of some kind.

1. Launch Font Book and see if it knows of

Superclarendon Italic.ttf

It may be able to repair it.

2. If you have another machine with a working iPhoto, then you could copy over the font from that - as long as it goes in exactly the same place, it should work

3. Other than that, reinstalling the app would be the way to go...

Did you delete the receipts before reinstalling?

To re-install iPhoto

1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)

2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.

2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type

/var/db/receipts/

2c: on 10.7 or later they're at

/private/var/db/receipts

A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.

3. Re-install.

If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.

If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.

If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

It gets about two thirds through the import and then crashes... I can import about 30-90 files at a time from a group of 500 and it will import some groups succesfully but then crash (for the same reason) on others but i still end up with a couple of those black courupted images within the successful imports for some reason.
