macbook pro won't start - apple logo and rotating cog

My macbook pro (snow leopard) won't start - I press start, it chimes, gets to apple logo and below is the rotating cog thingy and then just stays there.

So I've put the install disc in and tried to 'repair' the macintosh HD and the the message 'Disk utility stopped- could not unmount disk'.

So I suppose my question is - how do I unmount the disc?

Can anyone help?

Thank you

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Have you also tried holding down at the same time the without quotes "Command and R keys" at the same time? If you have not!, then make sure that you turn off the laptop, and then before turning back on your laptop hold those keys down and then turn on the laptop, but make sure you keep them held down until you get to the "grey screen", and then choose "Disk Utility" and see if your hard drive is showing "mounted" and also run the hard drive test. Ok. If still issue take it into Mac store.

OK I started mac from disc, unmounted the disc from the terminal, clicked 'repair' and got message:

'Disk Utility can't repair this disc. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files'

However, the menu within DU only says 'erase' but not reformat. So do I click 'erase' then? Is 'erase' the same as reformat?

Thanks
