finding my iTunes backup in Windows 7

Starting at the beginning. I have had a rough technology week. First my laptop screen shattered. Which I took in stride saying, it is ok, I can just use my iPad more. I pulled out my backup laptop which is ancient hardware but up to date software, and installed the latest version of iTunes. In order to get skype on my iPad I then had to install the new iOS on it. So I asked iTunes to back it up and then install the new iOS. It then asked for a password to restore my data. After several failed attempts, and an attempt at restore, iTunes is no longer trying to restore my data and seems to have no record of it. I find it hard to believe that the apple system so commonly used and so user friendly would be capable of making two years of my data evaporate into thin air so easily.

When you restored the device, you may have erased the backup. The location of the backup folder on your computer really isn't going to matter. You can only restore from the backups that iTunes sees.

Laucnh iTunes and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices. The backups that show in there are the ones that you can restore from, but you can also see these backups when you restore from the backup using iTunes.

The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system. Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.

iTunes places the backup files in the following places:

  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
  • Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
  • Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press the Return key.

You should have realized that your iPad data would be deleted automatically when iOS update. But luckily you have backed up your iPhone. You can try following ways to recover lost iPad contents:

1. iTunes: Restoring iPad from old backup will cause current data loss.
2. iCloud: Restoring from an earlier backup will revert all data and settings on your phone to those contained in the backup.
3. iTunes Data Recovery: You can extract any needed files from backup and recover them without reverting your current iPhone data and settings. But it is not free.
4. iPad Data Recovery: You can recover data from iPhone devices directly without any backup.
