SMC FAN Control

My MBP create to much noise while playing some game. Then i found out that there is a program can reduce heat and noise for mac intel. SMC fan control, is this really helping macbook to cool??


Is this safe to install for MBP? just want to get an idea before installing...

Mac OS X (10.7.2), Macbook Pro Late 2011

I don't recommend that type of applications too often because they modify the SMC in order to set a speed. If you don't like the changes you have made with smcFanControl, just do a SMC reset.


Respecting to the noise, if you hear it while playing games, that's because fans are working, and you shouldn't notice any difference after using smcFanControl because you will do the same that your computer does now automatically: turn on the fans. However, smcFanControl may contribute to keep your Mac cooler without having an enormous temperature, so it may increase the life of the Mac

Respecting to the last question, it may increase the life of your computer if you put the fan at a speed less than 2000 rpm. More than that speed may be dangerous for the fans and it may cause problems in the future. However, if you let your Mac set the fan speed automatically, first your Mac will increase the temperature and when it reaches a high temperature, it will automatically turn on the fans at a high speed for a very short period of time, so this may be worse
