I bought an older G5 iMac - in nice condition. After some chasing around, I found an installation disk set for a reasonable amount - and that too some doing! Now, I shall format and reinstall Panther to clear up certain issues. After that is done, can I upgrade to Mountain Lion??

A G5 can't be updated past Leopard 10.5.8; if it's actually an early 2008 iMac, it's a Core 2 Duo Intel Mac, not a G5, and can run Mountain Lion.

No G5 and no PPC (non-Intel, i.e. Power Macs) machines have been made since the summer of 2006.
Not to sound ignorant, but so many threads on this in both Power Mac and PowerBook address this same issue..
The answer is NO! Mountain Lion, Lion , or Snow Leopard will NEVER run on PowerPC Macs, not now, not ever.

The original poster is mistaken about his own machine. If it is a 2008 iMac, it cannot be a PPC Power Mac.
That's an Intel machine.
Well, the first source said 2008. The next said early 2004 - and that is a Power Mac. It came with Panther. And yes, it will nto take Mountain Lion, but it still works well and I am looking for OFFICE for MAC...
Get the serial number from Apple's System Profiler,
then you can input that s/n to get the exact date of manufacture here:

I too didn't understand the poster of the thread.. when he said Panther I was assuming it was a PPC Mac.. it seems he has an Intel Mac which of course it being a 2008 machine should run Mountain Lion with no problems.
It is - I now find - a 2004 model G5 with Panther.

The highest you can go is Leopard 10.5.8, but I personally wouldn't recommend it. I have a G5 with dual Tiger 10.4.11 and Leopard 10.5.8 boot volumes, and I can unequivocally tell you that Tiger is much snappier and more stable.
Tiger rocks, Leopard *****, even if iTunes or the App Store or some such gimmick will partially work in Leoprad but not in Tiger.

I was only reacting in utter shock to the post by BDAqua in which he said japamac had been chased away by insults. Despicable!
