What's the difference between Boot Camp and Parallel's Desktop?

Parallels is good for gaming.It comes with DirectX 10 support. vmware is better for OS tests,school work,and non-intensive 3D or 2D apps.I use wmware.

With these latest releases, Parallels has taken a clear lead on the gaming front. I tested quite a few games and generally saw better graphics and faster frame rates in Parallels than I did in Fusion.

For example, I installed Simcity 4, a tool, with the same detail and resolution settings in both Parallels and Fusion, Parallels generated 40 frames per second; Fusion could manage only 0 to 11 fps. I got similar results when I tested each virtualization program’s OpenGL speed using Cinebench.

I also tried Simcity 5. Although it installed in both virtualization apps, I could run it only in Parallels, as the game requires DirectX 10. (Fusion supports only DirectX 9.0c.) Not only did it run, it ran quite well. While Parallels' support for DirectX 10 is marked as experimental, it worked fine in my testing.

Great for both of them. I watched home alone (good movie) on all of the products in a linux VM (including virtualbox) and it worked fine.

VirtualBox is a very good application for virtual machines, so I wouldn't doubt to use it. However, as you want Windows for gaming, you need Boot Camp. Read > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3321

if you want to use windows only for gaming then you should not use virtualbox, vmware or any other virtual machine for gaming one should use bootcamp as virtual machine mean generic non 3d video card driver

how about what ilovemacsaid about parallel? whats the difference between parallel and bootcamp in gaming?

none of the options are good for your laptop but you can see it as booting just Windows or booting osx and within OSX booting windows. the first one is better for gaming and better for your speed 😉.

so no prarallels for gaming if i were you 😉

unless parallel is different then the other virtual machines then it will be horrible in gameing

1. it would not support the 3d stuff of the video card

2. 1/2 of the system memory would still be used by osx

No one has really answered the OP's post so here it is.

The difference between the two is system resources. Parallels shares resources with OSX and Windows at the same time. Bootcamp gives 100% resources to Windows. The advantage of having parallels is that you can use both operating systems at the same time seemlessly where as using bootcamp you can only use one operating system at a time. They have their advantages and disadvantages as mentioned above but go with what you think you need the most. If you are gaming then I recommend using bootcamp. If you are just going to use windows programs that don't eat up a lot of processing time or memory then go for parallels.

^this is the correct answer. Also, running apps natively avoids a number of keymapping issues between Windows and Mac(book) keyboards.
