Grid when cropping & straightening

The two ways to straighten an image behave differently.

Try the "Straighten" tool (from the buttons below the Viewer), not the "Straighten" adjustment brick. The Straighten tool shows a grid for me, when I drag the image with the mouse or trackpad:

Added: The "Straighten" adjustment will also show the grid, if I do not use the angle slider but rotate the image directly by dragging it using the mouse or trackpad. Does that not work for you?

They are really cute. I have seen them in many parts of Africa. The one above is living in Hermanus, South Africa. Here is another one from Serengeti National Park, Tanzania:

This is a feature. When you use the Straighten Tool an orthogonal grid is superimposed on the Image as soon as you click on the Image and drag the mouse cursor. When you use the slider or the value slider (that's what Apple calls the field with the number flanked by triangles), no grid is superimposed and you can see your Image "as is".

You can activate the Straighten Tool in at least two ways: clicking the icon on the Tool Strip (that's what Apple calls the mini-toolbar in the bottom border of the Viewer), or clicking the tool icon at the top of the Straighten Brick. When the tool is active, the mouse cursor changes to two equilateral triangles yoked together, one pointing up and one pointing down.

All of this is covered well in the User Manual.

Fwiw, Aperture distinguishes between "Tools" and "Brushes". Afaict, this distinction is based on user expectation and not on logic.

Andrew, do you see the yellow grid, when you hold down onto the image (off-center, close to the border) with the mouse or trackpad and drag it up or down and rotate it this way? You can still see the Angle-slider move, if you straighten this way, if the Adjustment tab is open.

Thanks! I was going to guess Hyrax, but I didn't think they would be found so exposed and coastal (my ignorance). I love that they are the evolutionary cousins to elephants.

Enable the "Show Guides" option in the "Crop" HUD, then you will see a grid.

The "Straighten" tool will show a grid, when you begin to rotate the image.
