What is auto lock do exactly?

I am confused on what this is

if it's set to 'two minutes' and you don't use the iPad for 2 minutes (meaning you don't touch the screen) it automatically locks it, with a code if you prefer. It's for safety. If you're working on the iPad and go out for whatever reason and forget to lock it yourself, it will auto lock after whatever time you set it to.
