Sound and subtitles ok, but no image

I'm trying to create a DVD from some avi and srt files. The preview in iDVD is ok, but when I burn the disc the videos are shown with sound and subtitles, but no image, just a black screen.

I use OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.3, iDVD 7.1.2 and Perian 1.2.3 codec.

Any hints?

It's the .srt files. The following is from this webpage: SRT File Extension - Open .SRT files

Text file containing subtitles used by various video playback programs; supported by DivX, DVD, and other video formats; includes the time each subtitle should be displayed followed by the text of the subtitle.

Subtitle files are often named according to the language of the subtitles, i.e. "moviename.eng.srt" for English and "moviename.ger.srt" for German subtitles.

NOTE: SRT files are text files used in video playback. Therefore, they do not contain any video data.

You will need the original video files that were used to create the .srt file.

Thanks for your reply, OT.

I do have the original video files used to create .srt files. When I play the avi files with quicktime, I get video, sound and no subtitles. When I play tem with Flip Player I get video, sound and subtitles. When I preview the iDVD project, as I said, everything is pok, video, sound and subtitles. But when I burn the disc with iDVD I get no video, just sound and subtitles. Doing tests I noticed a weird thing: when part of the video is a still frame, I get the image of that part of video on DVD burned with iDVD, but just that part. The rest stays, as told, with sound, subtitles and no image. I believe it's a perian issue.

Hi Paulo!

Firstly, you need to update Perian. Version 1.2.3 is what I use on an older Mac running Leopard, and I know they have made a newer version for Mountain Lion albeit possibly still in beta, but I have read in other threads that it works.

The main problem here is that you are using codecs that are incompatible with iDVD, which will not handle srt files nor most avi files, so they need conversion to something iDVD can use, such as for example Apple Intermediate Codec, the latter being what iMovie converts my avi files to before it can use them. Alternatively a Quicktime format.

But perhaps in this case iDVD is not the right application for such files. I have never used it, but Wondershare's DVD Creator says it can do this:

which includes this information:

How can I convert a .avi video and .srt subtitles to a DVD? AVI is widely used to store DVD movies and can be usually downloaded online. There is also subtitle for the DVD movies. To put AVI and SRT (or ***, SSA) together, use Video Convert for Mac (mountain lion supported) recommended in solution 2. You can easily add subtitle to AVI using the editing feature. After imported the video, click the "pen" button to open editing windows, and go to Subtitle tab to load external subtitle file from your computer.

DVD Creator:

is not free, but there is a free trial version you could experiment with before spending $49!
