Need to free up space!

I have an external drive, it's hooked up and everything. Can I now delete files taking up massive amounts of space and get them back later down the line? The reason for this is that my drive is taken up by 105 GB of "other" and I cannot identify what that is! thanks

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.5), 4 GB

"Other" refers to system files, documents, downloads... Read > http://pondini.org/OSX/LionStorage.html Now you know what you can transfer to your external drive. You can transfer the files you want to the external drive, but I don't recommend you to transfer applications, because they may depend of other directories and you could damage them
