Using AirPlay/Apple TV with guests

Can someone outside of home network play back content from their ipad using airplay and apple tv on the same wifi network? I will be hosting a group - each member with ipad containing support material - is being on the same wifi network all that is required to play back using airplay and Apple TV. Is AirPlay integrated into every version of iOS 6?
