Gmail contacts online not accessible

I am using an ipad2. I am trying to log into my gmail account via Safari and then send emails from there to my gmail contacts. Safari seems to be blocking access to my gmail contacts. I don't want to sync or import my gmail contacts onto the device, just simply send emails online to my contacts online. I can do this from my windows desk top with Chrome but can only see my inbox from the ipad. I also would like to add and edit my gmail contacts whilst online and not by syncing with the device. Has anyone come across this before?
