Apple Configurator

I have 28 iPads with individual Apple IDs already assigned. What will happen to the current apps I own on each Apple ID if I start using the Apple Configurator? Will everything get deleted? I want to start using Apple Config. for future purchases but can't lose the $500 of apps already purchased.

If you plan to use the iPads in "Unsupervised" mode, you don't have to delete the existing apps. You can simply add future apps using Apple Configurator on the "Prepare" tab. On the Prepare screen, be sure that Supervision is Off, iOS is "No Change," Restore should be "Don't Restore Backup." Click on the Apps tab and place a check in the box next to the app you want to install (you need to first download the app in iTunes, and then import it into Apple Configurator for it to appear in this screen.... click the "+" a the bottom of the window to add apps).

If you want to "Supervise" the iPads, it will wipe the iPads. However, you could always re-download the apps onto each of the iPads using their individual Apple IDs. This would be like using the "Layered Ownership" deployment model where multiple Apple IDs can be used on a single device.

Hope this helps!

Thanks nsdjoey! You were the first of offer the option of "Layered Ownership" and that solved our problem perfectly!

We had to turn all the ipads into Supervised iPads, erasing all the data, then were able to go in and download all the previously perchased apps on each device. It took some time, but it was a one-time deal.

Make sure when you are in Configurator from now on that in Preferences it is UNCHECKED to delete all data/apps not installed by the Configurator. Now we are able to use the configurator going forward and still retain liscenses to the many many apps we already purchased.
