Could fingernail cause scratch on rMBP display (or any display)

I absoutley hate it when people point and touch the screen! It drives me nuts!

Today a "friend" used her finger to point and touched my screen. Not worried about her finger but I was unsure if her nail made contact. They weren't long and they were plain (it wasn't painted it had no fake crap on it just straight up vanilla)

Assuming her nail did make contact could it do damage to the screen to create a scratch on the display?

I would assume nails wouldn't be hard enough to scratch the retina display? Right?

I don't think a fingernail could scratch the rMBP display. However, this one is much more scratchable than the previous MacBook Pro so you need to baby it.

Previous MBPs had a gorilla glass on top of the LCD; the retina MacBook Pro has just the plain LCD silica glass with no additional layer. That was an improvement as its thinner and lighter, but it does come at the cost that this silica glass scratches very easily. Mine got a chip within 4 months or so - but then the display was replaced for bad pixels anyway so no big deal. My previous 17" MBP had a perfect screen the entire 3 1/2 years I owned it.
