Q: Shutting down apps you are not using

Is it safe to double tap home screen. Hold down icon till it wiggles, and then tap on red minus to shut down an app? I was told by a tech at store this wasn't good? Yet others say it is. I don't want to stress out my phone. What's the best solution?

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.3

There is no problem with doing this. The apps that appear when you double tap home button just indicates which apps you have had open recently

The apps you see when double clicking the Home button are recently used apps. Most of them are not running or doing anything. A few apps may continue to function for a short time but the majority of the recently used apps are doing absolutely nothing.
