itunes is not recognizing my ipod

The latest iTunes may hide the sidebar. To show the sidebar, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.

With the sidebar visible, when you connect the iPod, does it appear in the sidebar, under DEVICES?

When you connect the iPod, does the iPod's screen change?

What worked for me was doing a reset of the device while connected to the computer.
