Cannot update Airport Utility and cannot use Time capsule

Hi guys,

I apologise if this is the wrong place to post this question as it's related to 2 issues that I believe are related.

So, for about a year now I have been unable to update my Airport Utility 5.6.1 when doing a software update. I quite simply get the error:

"The update “AirPort Utility” can’t be installed.

An unexpected error occurred."

I've obviously tried downloading it directly from the apple website here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1536

This fails as well with the error:

"The Installer encountered an error that cuased the installtion to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."

To be honest this has just been an inconvenience not essential so I have just ignored it for the past year.

However I now want to use Time Machine to back-up my HD. So I've gone to Time Machine iand as I don't have an external HD to use as a back-up I've attempted to use Time Capsule.

This doesn't work at all, when I click on the Set Up Time Capsule button; Time Machine just blinks and does nothing else. After some googling I found that when you click this button it should bring up the Airport Utility but this wasn't happening for me. After taking a look at the console the error is:

"AirPort Utility: Unable to load nib file: MainMenu, exiting"

I was wondering if anyone is able to shed any light on this or run through some troubleshooting with me on this? I am pretty sure the problem is down to Airport Utility and I'd love to re-install it but obviously it is not letting me.

Just so you are aware, I am on a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

Also I have tried running Disk Utility - I have rebooted using my Mac OSX installation CD and then ran both the repair disk permissions and repair disk options. There were a number of permissions that it repaired and the repair disk fixed it where I had 1 extra volume than I should have (on the top of my head I had 50,888 and I should've had 50,887 - numbers may not be correct).

Appreciate any assistance on this.

Does Console : Install.log (choose it from the left pane) give any more details ?.

it says that /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.AirPortBaseStationAgent.plist has 'dubious' permissions.

I'd run repair permissions from Disk Utility, then try again.

I've tried that before without luck (logged in normally and booted from the install disk), just tried it again now and I've had no luck again. Looking at what it does change it doesn't seem to touch the AirPortBaseStationAgent...

One thing I have noticed is that if I re-run the repair permissions it will literally repair the same permissions again. It's like it's not saving it when it's done....

ok, run this command in Terminal

ls -l /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.AirPortBaseStationAgent.plist

it should give a result similar to this

-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 694 18 Jun 2012 /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.AirPortBaseStationAgent.plist

ok, good : I mistakenly thought that repair permissions would take care of it.

The following command, run from an admin account, will give the correct ownership/permissions to that file... you'll be asked for the admin user password, which will not be echoed on screen.triple-click the line below, then copy/paste it.

sudo chown root:wheel /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.AirPortBaseStationAgent.plist; sudo chmod 644 $_
