Using Apple Configurator to upload profiles to an iPhone

I was using the iPhone Configuration Utility (ICU) to upload profiles to my iPhone 4S. There were a couple of useful tweaks that were only possible using this method, such as specifying that the App Store should always ask for a password, regardless.

ICU doesn't support iOS 6, so I've had to move to the Apple Configurator app. However, I can't for the life of me figure out how to use this to simply upload a new profile to my phone. As far as I can tell, any attempt to do so will erase all the data on the phone, which is unnecessary and unwanted under the circumstances.

Could someone explain the step-by-step method for doing this?

This is an "issue"? I have to pay to get Enterprise-level support from Apple just to migrate from ICU to Apple Configurator?

I'm frankly astonished that this is the current state of affairs. Has no-one used this app just to add a configuration profile to an iOS device?

Hey Scotch Brawth,

I haven't migrated from ICU to AC, but I have used Configurator quite a bit. Using Configurator in "unsupervised" mode doesn't require you to erase all of your data. I add configuration profiles all the time to iPads without deleting any data on the devices. If you try to "supervise" your iPad with Apple Configurator, then yes it will wipe all of your data.

If I were in your shoes, first I would make an encrypted backup in iTunes (always good to make a backup just in case something goes wrong). Then I would use the Prepare tab in Apple Configurator and create the configuration profile to specify that the App Store should prompt for passwords. I'd click on the "+" sign at the bottom of the "Profiles" area within Apple Configurator and choose "Create new profile." I would give the profile a name. Select Restrictions in the left column. Click Configure on the right side. Scroll down and place a check box next to "Require iTunes Store password for all purchases." Click Save. Back on the Prepare screen I would be sure that Supervision is Off, iOS is "No Change," Restore should be "Don't Restore Backup." I would place a checkmark next to the new configuration profile and click the Prepare button.
