sync issues?

When I try to sync my iphone to itunes, it does not recognize my device...it gives me a message "If you are experiencing problems with your iphone, you can restore it's original settings by clicking restore" will this erase all data, and apps from phone?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 6.1.3

Specifically, this sentence gives you the answer you are looking for:


Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
