For the first time my five year old iPad asks for a password. I have tried various passwords to no avail. I have backed up in iTunes and restored. Hopeless. How can I unlock it and/or get a new password if that is essential? Thanks
If you are saying that there is a passcode lock on your ipad then the only way other then entering the correct passcode would be to restore the ipad with the same computer you last synced with.
When is it asking for the password?
Did you just update the iOS to 6.1? If so when the device restarts you are required to enter your password for your Apple ID.
I have synced, backed up and restored twice plus used my ID but to no avail. Looks like a trip to Apple in Bluewater will be the only way to solve the problem.

For the first time my iPad asks for a password. I have tried various options but can't open it. I have backed up and restored (twice) but no different. What do I do next I wonder?
