Don't have permission for my own trash folder?

I just migrated from a TiBook to a MacBook with a little bit of difficulty. Long story short, I had permission problems because I my new computer didn't know that I was me. I'm pretty sure I've got it all sorted out except for one annoying thing: I can't put anything in my trash folder. Every time I get a dialog box that the file will be deleted immediately.

Any ideas?

Tony,

It sounds like you attempted to move stuff from the old computer manually. If this is done correctly, there shouldn't be any problems, but it is very likely that you must change/correct ownership after everything has been moved.

Correcting ownership of all of the files you moved is pretty easy; just follow these instructions:

* From your admin account, open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal. At the prompt, copy and paste this text into the Terminal window:

<pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">sudo chown -R `id -u`:`id -g` /Users/`id -un`</pre>

Now, press <RETURN>. When you do, you will be asked for your admin password. Enter it (it will not be echoed) and again press <RETURN>. When you return to the prompt, quit Terminal.

Using the above instructions will reset the ownership of your HOME folder, and all of the files it contains, to yourself. This includes your "trash" directory.

hey, you should try creating a new admin user on your computer, and see if you can delete there, if you can, try going to home folder > library > and moving the preferences folder to the desktop, if you can't, go to mac hd > library > and moving that preferences to the desktop, after removing each thing log out (for the prefs in your home folder) or restart (for the prefs in your hd library)

lets see how that works.

Create a new Finder window and click on the item in the sidebar with the house icon. From here, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, enter ~/.Trash/ as the folder's location, and then choose Get Info from the File menu. Under Ownership & Permissions, change the settings so that you have Read & Write access to this folder. If the Finder tells you that the folder couldn't be found, change the permissions on your home folder instead; this is the one you see when you click on the item in the sidebar with the house icon.

Thank you all for your suggestions!

Turncoat's idea sounded to scary. I'm not sure that I wanted to delete ALL of my preferences (and I wasn't sure if I could do it from my own account or if I had to create a new admin account) but I appreciate the suggestion.

I tried Niel's suggestion, too, but it just said "folder cannot be found" or "folder does not exist".

Scott wins!

I actually had a Unix-savvy friend use the "chown" command on some of my file folders but he couldn't find the Trash folder. I only know enough Unix to not be afraid (but probably dangerous). Thank you, Scott. It worked User uploaded file
