iTunes movies won't play

My Sony Vaio, was purchased with Windows 7 then upgraded to Windows 8, Everything was working fine until I loaded the previous and latest versions of iTunes. Now many of my movies are not playing, the application crashes when I select some moviesyet others play, and I have to shut it down. This does not affect my TV Programs. I have my movies and TV Programs stored on a back-up external drive not on my computed, and yes I have tried option of changing the directory location but that does not do anything.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
