Using iCloud without it accessing Calendars or Contacts

I want to use iCloud to be able to find my devices, but NOT for Contacts or Calendars.

If I log onto iCloud, it asks me to check whether I want this, and even if I answer no, it comes up with a list of these, all checked.

When I uncheck Calendars and Cotacts, it won't let me continue without erasing them from my Mac.

It seems that it pulls them into the cloud as a default, and won't let me have them on my machine unless I continure to use iCloud.

This seems crazy to me. Is ther any way of stopping it from doing this?

Thanks.
