Q: Frequent Crashes

2 GHz MacBook Pro i7 15" on 10.8.3. I'm having frequent crashes. First Chrome will do that sad folder-y thing and none of the Chrome fixes have helped. This is the indicator that before too long the whole computer will shut itself down. Computer was in the store in Feb/March and had just about everything replaced - logic board, RAM, etc. I have taken out and put the RAM back in to make sure it was not loose. Once the crashing starts, various programs will then crash until the whole machine does a kernel panic. I have had Chrome, Safari, Mail, and iTunes all crash and give me those huge reports. Here's the last kernel panic log:

Right now I'm getting ready to reinstall the OS but am super worried this won't do it. Any ideas? Happy to pull other reports if someone can direct me to them. The computer worked great for three weeks after I got it back from Apple then started this crashing thing - different than what it was doing before but almost as annoying. So far this has happened about 10 times today to a full reboot.

    Dear Julie,

    I've got precisely the same problem; I upgraded my RAM; I replaced the HD; I upgraded to mountain Lion and I get the same crashes as you do have.

    I'm working on a Imac late 2009;

    Now, after your story, I think it has to do with the upgrade of the RAM;

    I always get crashes at making backup (Timemachine, Copycloner, doesn't matter).

    Do you have a solution untill now?

    Like te hear from you; is very interesting because my panic reports are reporting just the same!!

    Thanks in advance!!

    If you have the original RAM, try reinstalling it to find out what happens.

    Sure !! It all was causes by the replaced RAM (4 banks of 4GB). I replaced the old ones (2 x 2GB) and the whole computer worked fine; No crashes at backing up to Seagate disk and also not to Time Capsule (with Time Machine and with Carbon Copy Cloner).

    The new sold RAM gave no error at installation; so I thought that the RAM would be good.... Weird.

    Thanks for the advice.

    Cheers from the Netherlands!

    Dear Julie,

    In my case it was really the RAM and I had the same panicreports.

    Thanks. If I can find the 16 gb they pulled out of the machine I'll put it back in. At this point I've given up on using the computer.

    meanwhile I replaced again the 16 GB with other brand RAM; everything works fine now;

    In the computerstore they told me that the older Macs (mine is late 2009) with the newer memory banks will often lead to problems; even if the specs are the same.
