How to make old emails stop!!

I'm just setting up my new Mac Book Pro, and I've already put my work email in, and recently put my personal email in as a second account. However, it keeps importing ALL the old emails and marking them as *new*. How do I make it stop? I only want my actual new emails and I don't want to wake up to 7068 'new' emails.
