My ipod touch (fifth generation) was stolen. I have never registered it with an account but have found the serial number on the original receipt. However, it says that the number is invalid. Has anyone had this problem? It's my last resort.

Open iTunes.
Hold ctrl, go to iTunes menu Help > About iTunes.
Info will scroll and it will display the last few iDevices (& serial numbers) connected.
Press the Space Bar to pause the scrolling display.
