Q: Mac Pro restore hd

Having huge problems restoring the Hd on a Mac Pro.

Started by verifying disk. It basically stopped part way through and said I had to restore hd from backup (1 to time machine hd with 16 gb free out of 982 gb used)

Tried restore. It hummed align for a few hours then said it could not continue and to start again! This was after saying it was going to Tahoe over 500 hours to complete.

Tried again. After selecting source for backup, it basically did nothing for over an hour and never did retina  a restroom point ( which had eventually happened the first time). Cut power. Goes to same point as before and does nothing (spinning color wheel only)

Reboot and try a verify disk on time machine hd. It has been stuck there for hours saying it will be clone in 36 minutes.

So here we sit with a machine seemingly lost in the twilight zone with no progress of any sort on the horizon

What suggestions might you have for this one?

Thanks

Geoff

most immediate issue now seems to be that I cannot read the TM drive other than an index of folders with nothing opening in the folders. Is this to do with an earlier OSX or am I sorta screwed here?

Otherwise it is off to square one and hope most of my apps are in the App Store (unlikely!)

One more Q if I could, If I go to DL ML it seems to want to start an install. If I need to copy it to a stick, do I just do that from a file that ends up on the desktop?

Again sir my gratitude and appreciation for your help is huge.

    Thank you

    Don't install.

Move the ESD file package and printout and follow the directions on how to.

If you run the installer, it does the old "this tape will self destruct on restart"

And go through the steps, you CAN install to another drive other than the one you have, you really want to leave SL as is, and have ML on another drive. Dual boot and later clone ML to another drive.

Redundant systems. Redundant backup methods. Sets. Clone + TimeMachine.

you don't have a working index for that TimeMachine drive.

Data Rescue and Disk WArrior can create their own... based on what they are able to find and assemble from file fragments on the disk drive. Making a disk2disk sector copy of the drive before using is sometimes warranted (DiscJockey Pro).

A very low free space on a disk can result in... would be like taking the card catalogue for a large library and throwing away the cards. And books are not on the shelves where they would normally be.

Moving to and from ML and SL does alter TimeMachine. And TRI-Eidre does have a program to help manage disk drive usage quotas. Of course 3TB drive and you can be storage and not need to worry.

So... no way to buy online and ship disk drives to you or to a store? you have to rely on what is on the shelf in a brick and mortar store? So you won't know what they have - other than by phone call and tell them to hold and reserve or send via Postal Service? - until you get there?

I do think Apple should automatically, before install, walk thru a "burn to DVD" instead, for one thing. Saving on media and shipping is fine, but not at the total elimination of backup  DVD or installer media

OK - got lucky and found a 3 TB in the neighbouring town (forgot to buy th 8 GB stick but it is close by) so I guess the one issue for now are the esact steps when dl'ing ML. I don't have it up now but seem to recall you just get a requester that you click and it goes. At that stage is it trying to start a pre-install routine? How do I actually see the file on the desktop to copy to a stick or can I direct the dl to a stick?

Simple questions but then I am simple and sorta not into this every day

    Thanks again

Must be me... just sipping first coffee....

AppStore is just downloading the installer to the location mentioned in those articles, from which you then need to salvage it and make a copy on or in another location.

    1. Purchase and download Lion from the Mac App Store. When downloaded it will be added to your Dock and Applications folder, but do not proceed with the installation and instead quit the store and close the installer if it has automatically opened.
    2. Go to the Applications folder and locate the Install Mac OS X Lion package.
At this point you can either create the installation disc, or you can copy the installer to a backup location so you can create the installation disc at a later point.
    3. Right-click the installer and choose Show Package Contents. (Note: You will see an option in the menu to burn the item to disc, but do not use this as it will only burn the item as-is and the resulting disc will not be bootable.)
    4. Go to the /Contents/SharedSupport/ folder and locate the InstallESD.dmg disk image.

From here you can either burn the disk image to DVD, or restore it to a hard drive or flash drive. To do this, ensure your medium has at least 4GB of capacity and then follow these steps:

Using Disk Utility you can either restore the image to a healthy disk partition (steps 1, 2, and 3), or you can burn it to DVD (step 4) to have it on an optical disc (click for larger view).

    (Credit: Screenshot by Topher Kessler/CNET)

    1. Open Disk Utility on your system.
    2. Drag the disk image to the Disk Utility sidebar
    3. To burn the image to DVD, select it in the sidebar and click the Burn button in the Disk Utility toolbar. Insert a blank disc when the burn dialog displays, and then click Burn (be sure to have Disk Utility verify the burn to ensure the media works as it should).
    4. To restore to a drive, select the Disk Image and click the Restore tab. Then ensure it is in the Source field (drag it there if it is not), and then drag your drive of choice from the Disk Utility sidebar to the Destination field. Then click the Restore button and confirm you wish to delete the drive and restore the image to it. If you run into any errors, try formatting the drive first and then drag the formatted volume to the Destination field instead of the entire drive device.

With the drive restored, you can now boot to it by either holding the C key down at start-up with the DVD in the drive, or to select a non-DVD boot drive, then start up with the Option key held down, and select the installation drive when it shows up.

so for the $64 question. Can I DL ML to the drive I am using now but will replace once I get ML installed on a new drive or should that be done on another Mac?

    Thanks so much ... again!

    Yes, of course.

Play around. Create a bootable DVD or flash memory (8GB+) TEST it out.

You can also reduce and shrink the size of your current drive to allow 100GB or more for Mountain Lion.

Or set aside and partition the 3TB (I would anyway, regardless)

    Mountain Lion 200GB

    Snow Leopard Clone 200GB

    Data 1.4TB

    "Other" 1.4TB

And... Mountain Lion installer volume: 32GB

All worked as advertised so far

Now there is one teensy little fly in the ointment, The App Store does not want to allow me to download to this machine (working from within the reinstalled SL. I know there is no problem with the App Store as it works fine on my other Mac.

Color me really confused on this. Tried the usual - reboot, etc. Made sure there were no DL's underway on the other machine connected to the account

    Clues??

    Gracias

    you aren't being specific enough.

some AppStore purchases require 10.7.5 or higher, so you can't until you install ML or Lion.

When you do you are fine.

You said you were about to download ML, so that was where left it, and how to possibly install it on a partition on your 3TB drive.

And for that you need to go into Disk Utility, click on 3TB XXXYYY and then click on the tab PARTITION and apply the number and size.

You can then have data, download, storage, and volumes for Mac SL and Mountain.

Actually I mlispoke. When I came back to my machine (SL Drive) there was the ML installer asking me to continue (which I did not) so now will go back and follow your instructions to get it onto another medium for install on the new partition on the new 3TB drive.

It also shows up in the dock and I am presuming in the Applications Folder as well

    Time for exploration :-)

    Thanks again

PS - does the App Store have a Pop Up blocker option?? Very mysterious performance

A final followup on this. I have had success getting ML installed on the new drive in the way outlined in your article you forwarded yesterday morning.

That simply was after downloading ML, taking the ESD file and copyting it to the Install partition I created on the new 3 TB drive. From there it was a simple click and go process.

One thing I discovered is that when you start to install ML and there are multiple drives mounted, it will ask you which one you want to install it on and as you wrap the install up it asks you which drive you want to boot from coing forward, Pretty handy.

Now just have to get Disk Warrior 4 and try to recover my Time Machine Drive

Thanks once again for everything, Your knowledge, guidance and patience has been most appreciated

I don't know what happens, but the new Apple Community, when I click on your last reply it does not show; when I click on your profile and last post, it does not go there.

Not your fault, it happens A LOT on the Apple Community Discussions now especially if a thread gets to n-posts to a thread.

I just can't find your last post

So... you are now flying Mountain Airlines! great.

    Maybe pick up another 3TB?

Meant to ask: what model 3TB is it? What is the drive model in Disk Utility, in status, on the label. Of interest is whether it is 'green' or not and whether it is a 7200 rpm (better for performance).

Should work regardless but there is a difference when used for system or performance is desired.

(I switched to Chrome to bring up the thread- one guess is Safari kept reading from history and cache and try to force it to fetch the latest and override whatever it does to automatically get the latest changes - I never had that happen with Windows and IE9 or 10)

The HD is a WD and full model is

    WDC WD30EZRX-00AZ6B0 Media

I was just lucky to find any store with any HD;s in a smallish town and at that the lady found it under some files in the back of a file drawer soooo.... I just count my blessings. Will be in Quito next week and track down another one or two

Sorry but my tower is built into a housing under my desktop and not easy to get at without disconnecting everything. It may be a GREEN cuz the color on the lable was different than my odler 1Tb

Now just strucggling with actually getting my CC to work for the Disk Warrior people, It workds with everyone else so gotta get to the bottom of that one

    Again thanks

Off to slowly remember all the other stuff I had bought and was lost on the main HD and hoping I can recover the TM eventually

Okay, any working drive is better than none!!

and NOW you tell us you have your system setup in the worst possible computer hutch? Those things do not provide air flow and cooling; they trap hot air. If true: it is a death trap.

That model is from NOV-2011 so it had to be hidden away -

Disk Warrior needs to be run from hdd, not from CD or DVD. Definitely not in your situation. And it is not optimized for working with TimeMachine with its super large complex file directory and index. And it needs to become a full 64-bit applicatioln.
