Airplane Mode...Will GPS work???
I am traveling overseas. If I leave the phone in airplane mode and have a WiFi connection, will the GPS work for mapping purposes and other apps?

However, you can use GPS with cell off by physically removing the SIM card from the device (just checked using geotagphotos and geotagr apps, which let you record tracks while choosing your location source). Not an ideal solution but it´s better than nothing.
Ayway, I hope Apple introduces the ability to turn on GPS location in airplane mode (just like you can turn wifi on)

You don't even need to remove the SIM card. Just go to settings>phone>sim pin. Turn it on. You need your pin from your carrier. Im on att and 1111 worked for my iphone 6 ios8. Restart your phone. Click cancel when it wants you to unlock your sim and there you go. You wont even run the risk of loosing the SIM card! Turn off wifi and Bluetooth from the command center and you are in business. To turn it back on just go to the same place flip the toggle put in the pin and it re connects.
3 FAILED SIM PIN ATTEMPTS LOCKS YOUR PHONE AND YOU NEED TO HAVE YOUR CARRIER UNLOCK IT. So make sure you have the correct pin. Contact your carrier if you need it.
My experience has been the same using a variety of GPS or Map apps.
That all changed with iOS 8.3 on 4/8/15.
I have an iPhone 6, and I have tested this with iPhone 5 as well. Both now utilize Location Services to the full extent in Airplane Mode ... with no access to cellular, WiFi, or Bluetooth for positioning.
I have tested this over the past two weeks in extremely remote areas well out of any service (northern Arizona canyons and dead zones on the Navajo reservation). Even the native Photos App will correctly geosync the pictures I take. I have recorded hours of hiking tracks while in Airplane Mode.
This is a new occurrence under 8.3. It has not previously worked before. For app programmers, I have tested and know for sure that both watchPosition and getcurrentPosition commands are working for apps that use them. This means an iPhone running iOS 8.3 will display your current position in Airplane Mode on any app which has locally stored maps (in Airplane Mode, the Maps App is unable to load a map of where you are due to no data connection, so maps must be stored on the phone). It will also continually track your progress in any number of hiking, biking, running, etc. apps.
I don't know if this is a glitch that Apple did not intend. I can't find any documentation showing it to be a new feature. But I have tested it on several backpacking trips and verified with other users who can now also use GPS in airplane mode.
Thanks so much azchumley! You're absolutely right: all my location-services-requiring apps work perfectly in Airplane Mode now! Sweet!🙂
Glad to hear you are experiencing the same results. I hope it isn't something that goes away in a future iOS update.
But it would be helpful for Apple to address it so that people know.
Right now, I've noticed that the battery will not last quite as long if you have some location services turned on. For example, if you are in Airplane Mode and take a lot of photos, the Photos App defaults to having Location Services turned on (meaning it will geotag the location where you take a photo). This takes more battery than if you are taking photos after disabling Location Services to the Photos app. It's not significant, but where I might have gotten 3-4 days of use in Airplane Mode while trekking across the Grand Canyon, if I take a significant number of photos, the battery may only last 2-3 days now.
I've also noticed that the battery drain while tracking an active GPS route is minimal when in Airplane Mode and you have a good view of the sky. But in a narrow canyon or heavy tree cover, the battery drain is noticeably higher as it likely takes more power to actively seek/lock on satellites with more difficult terrain.
PS - I didn't mention earlier, my phone is on Verizon. Not sure that matters to anybody else or not.
Apparently, this is a deliberate change and not a glitch. From this support page:
"If you have a device with iOS 8.2 or earlier, Airplane Mode will also turn off GPS."
Implying that for 8.3 or newer, the GPS stays on in Airplane mode. Definitely good news to track long hikes!

I just noticed that in the photos app, pictures I took of a sunrise out the window of a plane flying over the Atlantic Ocean were correctly geotagged while in airplane mode
I disagree strongly with my esteemed colleagues. GPS will still function in Airplane mode as Airplane mode turns off transmitters and GPS is a receiver. Period. According to the link posted earlier in this thread, Airplane mode has the effect listed below. You'll notice that "GPS" is not included.
When Airplane Mode is on, you'll see
in the status bar of your screen. In Airplane Mode, these wireless features are turned off:

I believe (though currently have no documentation) that this is a change. I believe that GPS did used to be turned off in Airplane mode. I think I'm not alone in this and that may be the source of the confusion, at least for some of us.

The past is prologue. 😁

Does that mean I'm going to spend a lot of time confused? 😉

I have no clue what it means. It just appeared to be appropriate here!
Shakespeare is always a good bet. 😁
Today I took some photos on a flight from Detroit to Washington DC, in airplane mode, and was surprised to find a couple of them properly geotagged when I downloaded them. Running iOS 9.0.
