Why isn't my Mac updating?

I click on check for updates, Then it shows updates available then I click update, but it doesn't update; instead the restart button pops up. When you click on restart it then starts to shut down, but then freezes up with the background on the computer screen.

Noticed issues started after I moved a large amount of picture files in to my Brand New Time Capsuale to clear up space on my computer.
