Q: Mail destroys my attachments

Hi there,

 

I am writing here as I could not find any solution via Internet yet...

 

I use Mac OS 10.8.3 iMac 27" i5 3.0, 8GB RAM, 1TB Fusion Drive with Mail 6.3 (1503). It works fine but when adding attachments (no matter which format nor whether drag and drop or via attachments button) the attachments are shown but have 0 bytes and are destroyed. When I attach them via icloud.com everything works fine. I deleted my account and added it again but have the same issue. Any ideas what to try?

    Mike,

     

    Have you tried the basic good old, Disk Utility - First Aid (verify/repair) etc.?

     

    Is there anything in your system logs when this happens?

     

    While it doesn't sound like the normal reason for a mail box "rebuild", it might help?

    thanks a lot for the quick answer and the very good thoughts - so:

     

    - I tried the disk utility from Mac OS and it didn't solve the problem...

     

    - Then I just googled how to get "access" to the log files on Mac OS (I am a poor Windows User on a quite new Mac ) - and the logs console is fantastic (even when I do not really understand much)

     

    So when I add my test.pdf to my mail via drag and drop about 20 times the same following message appears in the same second:

    I tried to rebuild some mailboxes but it couldn't solve the issue...

     

    Also the main error message from above didn't find really much google entries...

    I am having the same problem. I have tried everything mentioned above.

     

    One thing that I haven't seen mentioned yet is that if I do a screen clipping and paste it into the mail it does work. Images also work if I use Thunderbird.

     

    From what I can tell it's strictly a mac Mail problem.

     

    I have this problem with attaching images or PDF files. It either tells me it's a zero byte attachment or gives me a more general error message.

     

    Apple support wants $19. I'll probably give it to them eventually but am hoping I can find the solution myself.

     

    Anyone's input would be greatly appreciated.

    Sorry, I should have explained what it does.

    ls lists directories. The added options has it show it with all the permissions and Access Control Entries.

    No. It looks fine.

     

    You might try repairing permissions in Disk Utlity, if you haven't already.

    Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

     

    Isolating an issue by using another user account

     

    If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
