How do I switch audio in preferences when external speakers do not appear?

How do I swtich "audio out preferenc"e when it does not appear in system preferences? Playing DVD on Macbook Pro connected to TVvia HDMI but do not get audio when I connect to either directly to TV or via direct connection to amp for radio/TV via audio cables.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

So it sounds like you're trying to connect your MacBook Pro to two things - a TV via HDMI, and to external speakers.


For the first item, connecting via HDMI, these Apple computers supply only video signals over Mini DisplayPort: MacBook Pro (late 2008), (Mid 2009), and (Early 2009). Also, on some noncompliant Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters, the audio signal may not be passed to the HDMI device.
