As to the startup issues, check your login items (System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Items) and remove anything that you don't want to start up automatically.

after more research i see this un fixed permissions after running disc permissions, seems a common issue. BUt im still wondering if my hard drive is starting to fail. In the login window, no matter which button I pressed, shut down, restart, login... the login window went away momentarily and then came back so that id have to put in the password again. I finally had to just shutdown with the power button and restart. After that I checked the disk. repaired the disk with terminal but now im getting disc errors every time I check disc with utilities... and now im having the permissions problem...

Is my disc dying? Should I try re seating it?

    any help..

Normal. Ignore. Don't waste time repairing permissions unless you have a reason to, which you almost certainly don't and never will.

    Thank you.

I ran the apple hardware scan and it says no problems but Im still wondering if my hard drive is about to take a dump. Im not focusing on the permissions issue anymore, even though thats a new thing. Just wondering why my disc is still showing errors in disc utility.

Do you get any errors from Repair Disk (not Repair Permissions)?

Live verification of a boot volume is unreliable. If you get repeated directory errors from Disk Utility while booted from the installation disc, then the drive is failing, or you have some other hardware fault. Otherwise something unrelated is causing the login problem. I suggest you start a new thread in the 10.6 forum to address it, if you can't find anything helpful by searching the site. The permission warnings mean absolutely nothing.
