Unfortunately I cant find export in any of the drop down menus.

If there's no "Export..." under Preview's File menu, it's presumably a feature of newer versions of OS X.

If you have JPEG images in your PDF, consider reducing their file size without affecting their image quality via:

Free web app: JPEGmini

Free Mac app: JPEGmini Lite

Or find free apps to reduce PDF file size directly HERE.

Yes, reducing the size in MB was the aim.

But the question is in regard to a PDF, not an image. And, as already stated, presumably the dimensions of any images within the PDF would want to be preserved, not decreased. Your suggestion would decrease the dimensions as well as the file size.

PS Perhaps I have posted this under the wrong section, and it should have been under something like "reduce the size of a jpeg".

Yes, as long as you make it clear that your suggestion would decrease the image dimension size as well as the file size.

Earlier in this thread, the following site was mentioned — see how it reduces file size (bytes) without reducing dimension size (pixels)...

I have found that the following works very easily, even if it involves a few stages

iPhoto - decrease the size of a jpeg image

  • open iPhoto and the folder, and drag the photo to the desktop
  • double click the icon on the desktop, and it will open in Preview
  • under “Tools”there is an “Adjust size” button
  • adjust the size,by pressing the button
  • the icon on the desktop will now be the new size, and it can be dragged to iPhoto

You can try Preview.

Open the PDF in Preview and select Export. Select Format PFD and then select Reduce File Size in the Quartz Filter pull down.

Compressing a PDF really depends on what the PDF contains. If there are a lot of images you'll get a big reduction in filesize if not you might not see much of a change.

There are also online services to compress PFD files and of course you could create an archive of the PFD file in Finder which will compress the actual file. The user at the other end would have to uncompress it before being able to view it.

Dear Alancito

Using my method reduces the file size to under a half, typically from about 10MB to about 4MB. By the way, I used this method to reduce the size of a jpeg image in iPhoto.

Perhaps I have not understood the implacations of your comment, but I thougth that to reduce the size in MB was the aim, so that the image could be stored more economically or sent by email.
