Latest iOS update is killing the battery on my iPhone 5, how do I go back to the old one?

I just updated my iOS a few days ago, and now my battery is draining at a rate of 20% every hour. I've turned off everything I can think of, including bluetooth, wifi, gps, etc., and it's still exactly the same. I have not been using my iPhone anymore than before, if anything, maybe less. Is there any possible way to go back to the old iOS version? Would a system restore from an old backup work? My phone is not lasting more than a few hours before it dies... I really need to get this fixed.

First of all, I am afraid that there is now way to roll back the software to a previous version. Even doing a restore will only restore data and not a software version.

I know that it would seem that it was working okay in the previous software version but the only solution is to sort it for this version. You have mentioned that you have tried turning Bluetooth and other stuff off. Have you tried changing email away from your current setting. Have it check every 15 minutes instead. Also, if you are using numerous different email accounts, then reduce the number of accounts. The battery will wear down much faster if you are in poor signal areas, is this likely to be happening?

Finally, it might be worth cycling the battery. This is something that is worth doing monthly. Use you iphone until the battery level gets very low and it shuts off itself. Then charge it up. This recalibrates the battery and gives you best use.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I've done all of that too. I turned off email fetching completely and set it to manual. I cycled the battery twice now. I almost always have 3 or 4 bars, so it's not the signal. I even went as far as deleting my email completely along with the Facebook app. After all of that and rebooting, the battery dropped down 10% in the first 10 minutes. I think my last resort will be a factory reset. I have everything backed up. I'm just waiting for it to charge up (for the 4th time today) before I do it. This is so frustrating because my battery life used to be great. I could use it all day long, with wifi, Bluetooth, and GPS turned on, and I would still have about 30% left when I went to bed. It never died on me in the middle of the day. Nothing else has changed.

Apple has for a long time frowned on IOS Downgrades that even those of us in the Apple Developer Program have been told NOT to do it due to the following reasons: 1. It will Automatically VOID BOTH your Standard 1 Year Warrenty, AND your 2 Year Apple Care + Extended Warrenty. 2. You will be 100% LIABLE for the cost of the Repairs if you Damage your IOS Device while Rolling back the Software. 3. IOS 6.1.4 only fixes a Sound Issue in the IPhone 5 and any other Devices it was Released on, Nothing Else.

There is some advice that I can still give you however: Recently it has been noted that some people with BOTH the IPhone 5 AND the IPhone 4S sometimes have a Battery Drain Problem after doing an Over The Air Update over WIFI rather than using ITunes to do the Update! This Problem can very easily be fixed by selecting Settings, General, Reset, Reset All Settings! Hope that helps. If NOT then you may have to do the Reset all Settings and Data, but just make sure that you BACK UP all your Data to either ITunes and/or ICloud before trying that.

Hi CBabinyecz,

Make sure that your Location services are off, especially Traffic. Leave only those on that you need to have on:

Settings>Privacy>Location Services: Turn off any that you don't need polling for location all the time

Then go down to the very bottom and click on System Services - Make sure that Traffic is OFF, and turn off any others there that you don't need to have on.

Cheers,

Message for Gail from Maine: Turning Off Location Services is NEVER a GOOD IDEA! For one thing: When you Turn Off Location Services, it Completely Turns Off Find My IPhone! Here in Chicago Area on the 10:00 P.M. News Tonight we saw a story about a 13 Year Old Boy who had his IPhone Stolen after he Paid a Woman Prositute to come to his house for Illegal Activity. When she turned his IPhone back on, she was unaware that she was being tracked by the Chicago Police using Find My IPhone! They found her and Arrested her just by using Find my IPhone! Until Asurion comes out with a IPhone Recovery Software Tool, Find My IPhone is the only thing standing in a Criminal's Way of getting a Free IPhone if yours gets Stolen! Just FYI!

There were NO CHANGES to BATTERY LIFE in BOTH 6.1.3 & 6.1.4!

6.1.3 fixes the Lock Screen Vulnerability + Improves Apple Maps in Japan!

6.1.4 corrects a sound issue, that's all those 2 Updates do, nothing else!

I am a Member of the Apple Developer Program so I am 100% certain that is the case! Even though I was NOT invited to test 6.1.4, I was Invited to test 6.1.3 and I am 100% sure that there were no Battery Life Fixes or Changes in 6.1.3.

The main purpose of 6.1.3 was to prevent people from being able to press Call Emergency, Dial 911, then hang up and then have Full Access to the IPhone with OUT having to type in the 4 Digit Pass Code! Just FYI.

Viewing Usage Statistics

Awareness of how you use your iPhone and knowing how long your battery typically lasts can help you improve its battery life. You can view your iPhone usage statistics by tapping the Settings icon on the Home screen and choosing General > Usage. Under the “Time since last full charge” heading you’ll see two items:

  • Usage: Amount of time iPhone has been awake and in use since the last full charge. The phone is awake when you’re on a call, using email, listening to music, browsing the web, or sending and receiving text messages, or during certain background tasks such as auto-checking email.
  • Standby: Amount of time iPhone has been powered on since its last full charge, including the time the phone has been asleep.

When these two times are the same or very close together, that is almost always indicitive of something using your phone's battery life, even if you're not using it - (e.g. auto-lock set to "Never", Email auto-checking options set to "Push" and the email account having many mailboxes/folders)

I did not say to turn off Location Services altogether....I said:

Leave only those on that you need to have on:

Settings>Privacy>Location Services: Turn off any that you don't need polling for location all the time

Then go down to the very bottom and click on System Services - Make sure that Traffic is OFF, and turn off any others there that you don't need to have on.

Also, will you please STOP YELLING at everyone. Your input is appreciated, but not your yelling....

Perhaps it was Speakerphone NOT Sound for 6.1.4. I was simply letting everyone know the main purpose of 6.1.3 and why it is such a Critical Update To NOT Install it, NOT sure if all IOS Systems support 6.1.4 or if it's an Update like 6.0.2 (That Only Supported IPhone 5 AND IPad Mini) AND/OR 6.1.1 (Which Only Supported IPhone 4S). I have NOT gotten the chance to try out 6.1.4 yet, my family wanted me to be Down Stairs in the Basement with them as we had Quite a Strong Thunder Storm Tonight in U.S.A. Zip Code 60102 during Prime Time Programming!

Yeah, just noticed that on apple.com/support/downloads. I went there to check and see exactly how many of my devices are going to need this update. The good news is only 1 Device (my IPhone 5), the bad news is that even though its only 11.5 MB from 6.1.3 to 6.1.4: it still requires a WIFI Connection so this is going to have to wait until I can get over to Starbucks tomorrow.

Sorry about the yelling. It's been a frustrating day for me today, I got yelled at by the Ubuntu Forum Moderators on UbuntuForums.Org, then I find out that this 6.1.4 Update come out but my IPhone 5 was still originally telling me that 6.1.3 is still up to date, now it's offering me 6.1.4 but only over WIFI not cellular which does not help me out very much.

Latest iOS update is killing the battery on my iPhone 5, how do I go back to the old one?
