I've tried several formats, but the problem seems to be not being able to get the iPad to recognize any of them.  It doesn't even see the files.  The only file(s) I can sometimes get it to recognize are the ones shot with a camera onto an SD card.  Even then, it sometimes doesn't recognize their existence.  If I take an unused SD card and record video with my camera, it will see, and import the file to the Photo app.  But only then!  I'm perplexed!

I'm a bit lost - you first say

"The only file(s) I can sometimes get it to recognize are the ones shot with a camera onto an SD card"

    then you say

" If I take an unused SD card and record video with my camera, it will see, and import the file to the Photo app."

In the first statement, aren't you using an SD card in the camera?  And what do you mean by "unused SD card"?    Cameras put their files in specific folders on a card, and your device only reads photos and video from those folders, not from anywhere else on the card.

By unused SD card, I mean a card with nothing else recorded on it.  I've formated the card in the camera and then recorded video, and it will be recognized by the iPad.  However, I have a card that had precious photos on it, and I added video.  That video clip wasn't even seen by the iPad.

To be seen by the iPad, the photo and video files on the SD card (or USB flash drive) must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).

What type of SD card are you using - SD, SDHC or SDXC? And what capacity?

Take those movies, rename them to have names of exactly 8 characters. Such as MOV_1234

Put those files into a folder named DCIM then try again.

It can be done, i've done it, you just have to follow the strict naming convention that the iPad demands

One trick to this, you can't watch off the card, you have to import, watch then delete. So make sure you have enough room.

I've tried using a SanDisk Ultra II, 2GB card, a SanDisk SDHC 32 GB card, and smaller ones as well.  I have tried putting MP4, DV and MOV files into the DCIM folder, and into a subfolder "100_DCIM" as was mentioned somewhere else.  I have also made sure the 8 character file convention is followed.  All to no avail.  When I plug the card into the camera/card adapter and attach to the iPad mini, it comes up with "No Photos To Import".

I don't have my camera connection withme to test but will when I get home. The DV and MOV are likely because I don't think the iPad plays those video files. but should play the mp4.

    HOw mine is structured

    DCIM (folder)

    SAN_0301.mp4 (file within that folder)

I have cards that I know worked, so I'll test them and make sure soem software update didn't alter that functionality.
