MacBook Pro screen goes black at random ... does anyone have this resolved?!?!

I know there are multiple discussions out there dealing with this problem, but I have yet to see one of them resolved. I'm hoping someone out there has a real resolution to this problem, and would be willing to post it here.

I'm running an Intel Core i7 2.66 GHz MacBook Pro (video card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M), often with a Dell external monitor---either with the laptop clamshell open or closed; however, this problem happens whether the monitor is connect or not, clamshell open or closed . . .

Seemingly at random, the screen (both screens if the external monitor is connected) goes black. It can happen when very little software is running, and I am doing something as simple as just moving a Finder window from one location to another. It also happens when I am working in Photoshop and other software. There doesn't seem to be a specific task that brings on the black screen. Even tho the screen is black, the computer is still audibly running, and the ONLY thing that brings it back is a hard shut down by holding down the power button for several seconds, and then pressing the power button again to start up. I then get a automatic report generated to send to Apple (I've sent them about 100 by now).

I do not have "hot corners" activated, I have unchecked "Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes" in the display prefs, and I've unchecked "Automatic graphics switching" and "Automatically reduce brightness" in the energy saver prefs, since these were some of the suggestions I had read in previous posts. None of this has made a difference.

I have spoken to Apple support, who suggested this could be a problem with over-heating. I've installed iStat Pro to monitor the temps, but they don't seem out of whack at all. I can go days without the screen going black at all, and then I can have a day where it happens several times. I'm trying to avoid bringing the computer in to a technician because, inevitably, I won't be able to replicate the issue in the shop, and then I'll be paying $150/hr. for nothing.

Does anyone out there have a resolution for this problem? I'd be eternally grateful for a post. Thank you.

You were absolutely right. So here's the rest of the story of my 15" MBP:

After 2 diagnosis of logic board failure in Shanghai's Apple store and they were not able to do anything, I took my baby to the main Apple store in San Francisco. The Genius suggested me to send it off for a depot repair with a flat rate $310 (including $100 Apple service fee). Basically Apple sends out-of-warranty MBP to one of their US repair facilities for a complete "bodycheck" with a flat fee. They will test and repair EVERYTHING on the computer without giving you anymore notice (when I demanded a notice if they had to replace my hard-drive since all my files were on there but they said they can't, I had to back up my files before handing my MBP to them). You will receive your computer back within 3-5 days. That's what happened to my baby. I just picked it up from the store yesterday and I'm using it now - so far so good! They only changed my logic board. I paid $328 in total with tax. I guess this is the best solution for my case - I didn't have to buy a new MBP (although the Retina display sounds tempting) or spend over $800 in other countries just to replace a logic board.

There is no way to "work your way through these discussions", as they are not serviced by Apple employees, only other users like you. There are no standard escalation procedures from here.

You will not know whether you have this Latent Defect until they can run the VST Test. That will take your making a Genius bar appointment and insisting it be run on the spot, because the standard "loop the diagnostic running all night" test does not find this problem.

Once you know for sure whether you have the problem described in the recall, you could contact customer service and discuss the situation with them. Many store Managers now seem to be defering to Customer Services decisions.

So what's the deal, there's really no way to fix this? My warranty just expired so I'm all outta luck.

I'm on a 2011 MacBook Pro with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M.

I've been running Windows 7 w/ BootCamp for a long time. First I got this black screen like once a month. Usually when starting my laptop after it's been asleep, or when using Photoshop, forcing me to do a hard reboot to get my system back up. Then months later, it started happening once a week, then once a day, then as of yesterday -- several times an hour.

So I installed Windows 8.1 hoping that would fix things, but it just made things worse. Now it happens almost every time I open up a new tab in Chrome or Firefox. At least this time though, my display is successfully recovered most of the time so I don't have to reboot and lose all my work.

This seems to be a common problem on other forums too:

Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 332.28 stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

> The 2011 models have an AMD graphics chip. GeForce GT330M is a 2010 model, and subject to TS4088.

You're right, my bad.

Anyway I ended up just disabling my GeForce card, using the default Windows display driver and now everything is fine.

I'll keep updating my GeForce driver though, maybe Nvidia will fix this at some point in the future.

I noticed that this problem kept happening more as the weather got hotter... so eventually I experimented and shoved a cold pack under the left hand side of the laptop... I guess where the hard drive is (?), and PRESTO, within maybe 20s the screen comes back on and is FINE again pretty much permanently! cheaper than a $900 screen replacement for sure!

Hello, I live in Egypt and in Egypt there are no geniuses that I can find. It is basically a complete mess. My warranty is expired, and when I tell anyone about the problem that I know is a manufacture issue I am expected to pay... I don't think it is fair. I don't know what to do, all I know is owning a Mac product in Egypt is a liability, because I know that this problem that I have been trying to solve since forever will not be solved, without me paying a whole lot of money and waiting for a very long time. Isn't it the ethical thing to do, to return all flawed machines or to fix them regardless time or warranty, if it is not the consumer's fault?

I have had my MacBook Pro since 2011. This problem started about a month ago (Aug 2014). I tried everything suggested in the Support Community. Somewhere I read the problem was caused by overheating. I had noticed that every time the problem occurred, the back of the computer was hot. What I did was install an external fan (USB powered), and the problem has not come back.

For now, if you have not tried so, you should give it a try. Best regards!!!
