Mac Pro Kernel Panic

So I got this new Mac Pro and was testing it out (fairly casual use, mind; just web browsing) when it kernel panic'd on me.

Here's the error report it generated on reboot:

Any insight? Tower seems remarkably quiet; I hope it's not cooking itself. Above all, though, it is under warranty so would a genius bar visit be advised?

That kind of error:

machine check, status 4 or 5, caused by stuff called from CPU Power Management...

Is almost certainly an uncorrectable memory error.

It is time to buy some new DIMMs for it. Your Mac Pro 5,1 does not need pairs, and buying new modules smaller than 8GB does not really make sense any more.

as for finding that bad DIMM. try keeping an eye on

About this Mac > ( More Info ) > Memory...

The detailed table that shows the status of each DIMM often shows single bit errors accumulating before the double-bit error that halts the machine. You could also try Apple Hardware Test, but false negatives are common unless you loop the test and run overnight, or use Rember or Memtest.

About this Mac > Memory doesn't say much; just:

Size: 2 GB

Type: DDR3 ECC

Speed: 1066 MHz

Status: OK

Manufacturer: 0x80AD

Part Number: 0x484D54313235553754465238432D48392020

Serial Number: 0x20C244E4

And similar for the other one.

Rember is running now so I'll see, On the plus side, the three 8GB sticks I ordered have cleared Memphis and are en route so if it is a memory problem it'll soon be sorted.

I just discovered, though, that I do not have a recovery mode partition (command-R does nothing) and holding D on startup for apple hardware test doesn't work either.

The Mac Pro features Error Correcting Code Memory. Extra syndrome bits are stored with each word in memory. When read back, there is enough information to both detect and correct single-bit errors. This is done by Hardware in the Xeon Processor in less tahn one additional memory cycle, and your Mac keeps working. In the background, most of these correcxted errors are noted in the memory display I posted above.

Most double-bit erriors cannot be corrected, and they cause the machine to halt to avoid poisoning your data. This causes a very distinctive kernel panic with Machine check and reason 4 or 5. In some cases, the exact module cuasing the problem may be called out, in other cases not.

Your error is a machine check with reason code 4 or 5. That is almost always memory error. Software is generally incapable of causing a machine check.

Finding memory errors can be extremely tedious, and may take several days of running all-night tests and keeping an eye on the memory display. 7 passes of memtest is nothing.

----

When the error will not show itself, One desperation move I have used is to shuffle the memory modules in a predictable way, so that they move to different addresses. This sometimes changes the symptoms enough to cause the problem to be found, but sometimes not.
