Difference between downloading and installing ios

what is the Difference between downloading and installing ios? When you download it, does it take up space? You leave the software update settings on "downloaded" for a long time and it has the "install" button, is there a possibility of the phone installing it on its own??

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.2

Basically downloading and installing are the two steps to upgrading your iOS. Yes, it will take up space, but the advantage is if you have a sketchy or slow internet connection that may take a long time to download, you can download the iOS without preventing your using your device for other purposes. Then, once it has been completely downloaded, you can install it.

Once it has been downloaded, it will just sit there on your phone until you press the install button. The phone will not install it "on it's own", but there is the possibility that you press the "install" button unintentionally.
