Help needed with 3gs ?

Hi again,I bought an iphone 3g from ebay only to find I can't add apps like facebook etc due to the firmware only reaching 4.2.1

I've since then gone & bought a 3gs from abay & it arrived yesterday.

The seller said the phone was officially unlocked by vodafone but I've tried 2 other Sims ( 3 & o2) & both of them don't work so not 100% sure how to find out if it is unlocked :-/

Also when I plugged the iphone in to the PC iTunes pops-up as expected (using the vodafone sim) & asks me this " A new iPhone software version 6.1.3 is available for the iPhone.Would you like to update your iPhone now ?" I click on update & the phone it's self say's Sync in progress & in itunes the loading bar starts to move etc.

After the loading bar say's restoring iPhone I then get this pop-up in iTunes saying "The iPhone could not be restored.An unknown error occurred (3194)."

I would send it back but it's a 3gs & in very good condition for price.

I don't think the phone is faulty.

You can check out this support document for the 3194 error, http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4451, but there can be a number of reasons. One is the device could have been jailbroken, but follow the steps in the document and see if you can correct it.

Tried it again in iTunes for around the 8th time but for some reason it accepted the update :-)

I've also tried a giffgaff sim but says no service.With the vodafone sim it works perfectly & so looks like it's locked to vodafone & not officially unlocked by vodafone as seller stated.

Would vodafone tell me if this iphone should be unlocked if I called them ?

I'm not sure if they would be able to tell you. They might with the serial number, but it might be they don't share that type of information. You can also ask them what it takes to qualify for the unlock if you really want one.

Yes I'll need it unlocked as I'm using giffgaff & don't want to go down the rubbish jailbreak way as you lose GPS & can't do updates etc.

I'll contact vodafone tomorrow (day off work) & see if they can unlock it for me for around £20.
