Airport Express setup. Local/LAN network only. NO INTERNET.

Hi,

I am attempting to set up a home sharing network for my Grandma that will stream iTunes Movies, TV Shows and music between an AppleTV 3rd generation and an Original iPad via an airport express. My Grandma does NOT have internet and has no plans to get it either.

2011 iMac:

- System Mac OS 10.8.3 (Lion)

- iTunes 11.0.2

- No firewall up

2011 Airport Express (Not Extreme):

- Create network, password protected, no internet - amber light flashing.

AppleTV 3rd Generation

- Lastest Firmware

Original iPad:

- Latest update for system and all Apps

I set up the airport express to create a network, but without the internet the amber light blinks continually.

I used my iPhone's internet to set up her iMac iTunes and appleTV with my Apple ID and password.

When I disconnected my iPhone from the network everything still worked and the iTunes library media can be seen perfectly on the AppleTV. 😁

However, she likes watching movies on the iPad in bed.

1. I connected the iPad to the internet and input the correct Apple ID and password.

2. Disconnected the iPad from the internet and connected to the WiFi (with no internet) home sharing network via the airport express.

3. The iMac can see the iPad on the network and offers to sync via wifi and everything.

But I can't see the iMacs media library when i open the Videos App on the iPad.

Can the original iPad do this (Airplay?)or can only second generation iPads (and up) stream media content from iTunes?

(I know the original iPad can't mirror but thats all the information I could find on the support communities.)

Is the Airport Express continually attempting to connect to the internet causing network interuptions?

If so is there a way to setup the airport express to JUST be a local network?

On a side note, I have also setup Air Video Server (App and Mac aplication). It can see all the iTunes media files however the network will sporadically drop out with an URL error or network timeout.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

FYI:

I solved the above problem... set everything up.... restart iPad. 😊

The Video app now can see the shared library on the Mac.

Also for those interested in the local network with no internet. I can't give you specifics on the settings for my aiport express but it worked. The amber light flashes but if you set up the airport using the Airport Utility app on your iPhone (vs your Airport Utility on the Mac). The iPhone app gives you extra options to ignore warnings which if selected will turn the light solid green.

Hope this helps.
