Command R not working.

Hi,
I bought my macbook pro about 2 months ago online from Apple website. I checked the info about the laptop 13inch 2.9Ghz intel corei7 and its a mid 2012 macbook, now i updated the software to OS x 10.8.3 and supposedly there is supposed to be a function Command+R which you can press during the startup and it should allow you to restore your mac/reinstall. I've tried it numerous times holding down Command R during startup however nothing pops up and it just goes straight to the login screen.
How do i get it to reinstall?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

I was given lovely old iMac model 4,1.system version is Mac OS X , 10.6.8, It would be nice to Have such an old model in a working condition.

My friend doesn’t remember any passwords but it starts ok.

However I wanted to erase all his old stuff and have a fresh copy working.

It doesn’t look like there is any recovery disk installed or any dvd included with fresh system.

CmdR doesn’t work at all, keyboard is wired mouse wireless, it is connected to my WiFi without any problem. Should I download fresh system? Create bootable system on disk or how to get it erased and freshly working.

Snow Leopard 10.6.8 does NOT support Command-R recovery mode.

You can try doing a password reset from Single User Mode

Have you tried to press those keys after hearing the startup sound and hold them until you see the Apple logo in the screen? If not, do it.

Also, try to start your computer holding the Option (Alt) key, so you should see all the bootable devices. If you see one named "Recovery HD", select it and you will start into OS X Recovery. If you don't see it, you will have to reinstall OS X (to do it, hold Command, Option and R keys while your computer is starting, and reinstall OS X).
