Movies on a itouch

I have some movies on my computer and was wondering if I can import them to iTunes so I can put them on my itouch or do I have to convert them first

iPod touch (3rd generation), iOS 6.1.4

You may have to convert the format.

If you have to convert the free HandBrake program is great.
