creating a new id on a refurbished iphone 4 with old customers details

my daughter has just purchased a refurbished ipod 4th generation and when she tries to create an Apple id the person who owned it previously, email pops up and she can't get any further even though she has tried to create a new id. Please can anyone help, thank you.
