Q: Microphone on keyboard and Siri can't hear me

Recently , I was trying to talk to Siri and use the voice-to-text microphone method on the keyboard; it isn't able to hear anything or what I'm saying. Please help me. I don't know what to do. Also, on the Snapchat app, when I take a video, it won't recognize my voice or any other sounds.

Seems silly, but I had the same issue; I've reset settings, reset phone, disabled and enabled siri, no luck. But after doing these steps again after resetting all settings, it's fixed.. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4079

    Disable/Enable Siri worked

Update: Siri stopped working for me again. Did not change anything. She is slow to activate, if at all.

I have had this problem the last few days.

Executive summary: In brief, it was a hardware problem: I went to apple store, they check and as I was under the 1 year warranty they replaced my iphone 5.

    Details:

Symptoms were strange:  Siri and dictation did not work on the phone itself but did work with headphones.  It appeared that neither Siri & dictation could not hear me (the wavy line did not move).  The speakerphone also didn't work in that people could not hear me.  However, Siri raise to speak worked, voice recording worked, etc.  It seemed so bizarre that it could only be a software bug.  But not.

Solution: I went to the apple store.  They took the phone and checked it out.  There was a hardware problem with one of the microphones.  There is more than one microphone!  One was broken.

There is the microphone on the bottom next to the speaker that makes sounds.  This is the regular microphone one talks into.  Then there is another microphone, a tiny one, on the back next to the camera.  Apparently this one is for videos.  Now most applicaitons just use the regular microphone but some applications use both.  And Siri and dictation use both.  And the little one was broken.  Hardware problem.  Phone was replaced.

Moral of the story:  maybe it could be a software problem, but it can be hardware.

I was having this same exact issue after upgrading to 7.1.2. I erased my iPhone and restored from an iCloud backup, and now it seems to be working fine.

Regarding the two mics, I chatted with an Apple rep about this issue and showed him this thread, and he had this to say:

"Thats not exactly accurate… making phone calls uses both, one to capture your voice and one to remove the background noise. Siri uses the primary mic, the same as the dictation and phone/speakerphone."

So, there's that, for whatever it's worth.

I had the same issue with a iPhone 5s. Because the iPhone wasn't covered by a waranty i tryed to fix the problem myself and I found a solution.

I found this Page in the Apple KB: i Phone: Microphone issues There Apple shows where the microphones are on the iPhone 5 and later. Interesting is the Mic 1. This Microphone is situated near the earspeaker and is used for noise-canceling when using Siri, Didaction etc. After Replacing the Sensor-Flex Siri worked again.

I am having the same problem since the 8.1 update. iPhone 5s.

Siri "Can't hear me". When I hold down on the Home button, Siri says "What can I help you with" but the animated soundwave doesn't pop up and it doesn't respond to anything I say.

Same behavior when going into audio dictation mode in the keyboard.

Resetting the phone does reactivate Siri, but only for a short time, then it goes back to this behavior. Something appears to be disabling Siri's hearing a while after I do a reboot.

I have tried turning Siri on and off in Settings, but this doesn't effect it it not working once it's turned back on again.

This behavior also happens while plugged in saying "Hey Siri" turns on the phone, but then she can't hear me.

Another thread mentioned it might be a conflict with Airplay (which I use regularly) but turning off airplay didn't reactivate Siri for me, and the behavior has occurred while I'm in the car and not connected to anything.

This is basically making it impossible to rely on Siri for anything at the moment. I can't be expected to reset my phone every time I want to use Siri.

I have exactly the same issues and comments as Jeff - for my iPhone 6. I've conferred with senior apple techs, done a factory reset, only leading to a temporary fix.  My smart phone is not a toy; its a tool which I rely on for conducting business. Apple should not include and market core features which have not been properly beta tested. Apple should be much faster with fixes when core issues like this arise.  One of the reasons I switched from other platforms to Apple was for quality - which was excellent up until the last couple of years. Apple's QC seems to be going in the wrong direction. Steve would not have tolerated this and heads would be rolling. Just sayin.

So - anyone got a fix or have any inside info in what's coming in the way of updates?   Any point in hammering some poor soul at the Genius bar to give me a new phone?

I also have an iPhone 6; it's less than a month old and I am finding similar issues: both mics are working (tested both by alternately blocking them using voice memo), but dictation to siri and messaging/email does not work.  Thus I believe it to be a software issue.  Interesting also that using Google for search, the mic works fine.  There is no on/off toggle for mic use like there is for google.  Suspicious me thinks that there may be something nefarious going on, like google blocking access to their servers for apple requests like voice dictation (selective proprietary lock-out).  But alas I really just want the functionality back, and not being able to use voice as an input will be a MAJOR MAJOR deal-breaker if not resolved.  Have tried all solutions listed above including various re-boots then the monotonous "restore" from the cloud which does erase some good data for some apps.  Maybe people are off for Christmas and not paying attention?
