Why can't I adjust my volume? or unmute?

My imac volume stopped functioning two days ago. I can't adjust the volume. I also can't unmute. There is no sound. I have tried some of the ideas from other posts (plugging in and unplugging head phones), but that didn't work. Any ideas? In Sound Effects, I can't get internal speakers to show.
