This is for my (mid 2012) Mac mini 1.7GHz running 10.8.3. The computer's hard drive is 128 GB.
The Finder window status bar says I have 74 GB available. Disk Utility says I have 21.03 available. WhatSize says I have 21.0 GB available.
I added the size of all the files (both visible and invisible) using both the Finder and WhatSize, and they all add up to about 41.2 GB.
I hope I don't need to clean install to fix this...

Try this app, Omni DiskSweeper it will give you an accurate count of all of your files and folder sizes. You may need to user disk utility to verify/repair your hard drive. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I already ran Disk Utiltiy. There were a few errors reported about bad sectors, btu right now it says everything is fine.
I downloaded DiskSweeper. It is giving me the same information that I reported above.
If you had some bad sectors reported then your hard drive is about to fail, you should back up your entire drive as soon as possible. Then replace the hard drive.

The Finder displays the available space on the disk without accounting for the local snapshots, because local snapshots will surrender their disk space if needed."
Linc- Really? A difference of more than 50 GB? When I try to copy a folder larger than 25 GB, Finder says there is not enough free space.
Eric- Bearing in mind this is a MacBook Air, and the hard drive is an SSD, is it really all that likely for the drive to be failing? Should I make a Genius Bar appointment?
The difference between the amount of free space, as shown by Disk Utility, and the amount of available space, as shown by the Finder, should be equal to the space allocated to Backups in the Storage display. Is it?
