Time Machine asking for more space

I just bought a 1TB external hard drive and partitioned it into 4 segments. My macbook pro is 4GB total hard drive space. So I partition 4GB as my time machine space. Then I go run time machine and it says I need 217.33 GB. Someone please tell me I'm making some simple mistake!

Your mac has much more hard drive space than 4gbs. That 4gbs is probably the amount of ram you have installed.

Why would you partition a external into 4 drives. You will end up needing more space on one of those partitions eventually and then you will need to wipe that drive otu and start over. Better to partition it into only 2 drives. one for the time machine backups and the other for storing files on. I'd split it down the middle.
